Jackson Financial's Third-Quarter Adjusted Operating Earnings Rise to $517 Million as Record RILA Sales of $3.0 Billion Lift Retail Annuity Sales 22%

Jackson Financial reported third-quarter 2026 net income to common shareholders of $847 million ($12.37 per diluted share), adjusted operating earnings of $517 million ($7.55 per share), record registered index-linked annuity sales of $3.0 billion and a $1 billion increase in its buyback authorization.

Jackson Financial Inc., the parent of Jackson National Life Insurance Company, has reported its third-quarter 2026 results. The company sells variable annuities, registered index-linked annuities (RILAs), fixed and fixed index annuities, and institutional products, and it manages assets through PPM America. The figures below come from the earnings release Jackson filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as Exhibit 99.1. Where this article adds a percentage or a difference, it is calculated here from the reported figures and is labelled as such.

The headline numbers

Net income attributable to common shareholders was $847 million, or $12.37 per diluted share, compared with $65 million, or $0.92 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2025. That is a very large swing, and it is mostly an accounting effect rather than a sign that the underlying business grew thirteen-fold. Jackson hedges the guarantees in its variable annuities, and under U.S. GAAP the hedging instruments and the liabilities they protect are marked to market in different places on the income statement. The release shows net losses on hedging instruments of $1,682 million, offset by gains of $1,071 million on market risk benefits, and net hedging results classified as non-operating of negative $213 million. The release also reports a gain of $337 million from business reinsured to third parties, against a loss of $176 million a year earlier. Those items sit outside Jackson's own measure of operating performance.

The measure the company emphasises is adjusted operating earnings, which strips out those hedging and reinsurance effects. On that basis Jackson earned $517 million, or $7.55 per diluted share, against $433 million, or $6.16, a year earlier. Calculated here, that is growth of about 19% in total dollars and about 23% per share, and the faster per-share growth reflects the smaller share count after buybacks. Excluding what Jackson calls notable items, adjusted operating earnings were $7.67 per diluted share against $5.98. Pretax adjusted operating earnings, which sum the four reporting segments, were $612 million against $505 million, or roughly 21% higher by the same calculation.

Where the earnings came from

The Retail Annuities segment did nearly all of the work. Its pretax adjusted operating earnings were $638 million, against $494 million a year earlier, an increase of about 29% calculated here. The Institutional Products segment earned $23 million against $31 million. The Closed Life and Annuity Blocks segment, which holds older business no longer being sold, lost $3 million against a profit of $15 million. The Corporate and Other segment lost $46 million against a loss of $35 million. Added together, $638 million plus $23 million, less $3 million and $46 million, gives the $612 million total, which matches the prior-year build of $494 million plus $31 million plus $15 million less $35 million, or $505 million.

For the first nine months of 2026 the release reports adjusted operating return on equity of 17.3%, compared with 14.0% a year earlier, and GAAP return on equity of 15.7%, compared with 2.7%. The release does not give a full-year forecast, and nothing in these figures should be read as one.

Sales: a record in RILAs

Retail annuity sales rose 22% to $6.5 billion. The composition matters more than the total. RILA sales reached a record $3.0 billion, up 44% from $2.1 billion. A RILA is a registered annuity that links returns to a market index and offers a defined level of downside protection, with a cap on upside, and it has become one of the fastest-growing retirement products in the United States. Variable annuity sales were $2.8 billion, down 3%. Fixed and fixed index annuity sales were $796 million, up 79% from $444 million. Institutional sales were $755 million, down from $1.0 billion.

Jackson's chief executive, Don Cummings, pointed to the record retail annuity sales in the release. Within retail annuities, RILA and fixed product sales grew sharply while variable annuity sales were slightly lower.

Capital, cash and the balance sheet

Jackson National Life's statutory total adjusted capital was $5.9 billion, and its risk-based capital (RBC) ratio was 524%. The release says the ratio was lower than in the second quarter because new business raised the required capital, which is the normal cost of growing a business that carries guarantees. The company reported free capital generation of $281 million and holding company free cash flow of $275 million, which included a $325 million distribution from the insurance subsidiary. Holding company cash was about $1.4 billion, against a minimum buffer of $325 million.

Jackson returned $291 million to shareholders in the quarter, $230 million of share repurchases and $61 million of dividends, which the release describes as 39% more than a year earlier. The board also increased the share repurchase authorization by $1 billion.

Two book-value figures need careful reading. Common equity was $7.9 billion, or $117.72 per share, against $138.17 per share at December 31, 2025. Calculated here, that is a decline of about 15% over nine months. Adjusted book value, which removes the effects of accumulated other comprehensive income and the hedging-related items that move with markets, was $11.1 billion, or $164.47 per share, against $155.78. That is an increase of about 6%. The two measures point in different directions because the GAAP figure absorbs market-driven valuation changes that Jackson's hedging programme is built to offset economically. Investors and policyholders should look at both, and at the statutory capital figures, rather than treating either book value as the whole picture. PPM America assets under management were $101.8 billion, up 13%.

What the release does not say

The release is a company document, and its adjusted measures are the company's own definitions. It does not give a stock-price reaction, an analyst view or any commentary on regulation. The comparison of hedging results with the prior year is also presented in a way that is hard to reconcile between the narrative and the table, so this article quotes the current-quarter figure and does not rely on the prior-year hedging comparison. Readers who need the exact definitions, including what counts as a notable item, should read the full exhibit.

What it means for annuity buyers and investors

For buyers, the main point is the product shift. RILAs offer more protection than a plain variable annuity but less growth potential, The size of Jackson's RILA sales shows strong demand for this type of product, although the release does not explain why. A buyer should still compare caps, buffers or floors, surrender charges and the insurer's financial strength, since the guarantee is only as good as the company that issues it. Jackson's 524% RBC ratio and $5.9 billion of statutory capital are the type of figure to check.

For investors, the quarter shows how much GAAP earnings can move around in a business built on hedged guarantees, and why the company steers attention to adjusted operating earnings and capital generation. A buyback authorization raised by $1 billion also signals that management considers its capital position comfortable, although the release itself does not say how quickly the authorization will be used. Anyone relying on this article for a decision should read Jackson's own filing and consider speaking to a licensed adviser, since it summarises one quarter's reported numbers and is not a recommendation.

Key Points

  • 1Net income attributable to common shareholders was $847 million, or $12.37 per diluted share, against $65 million, or $0.92, a year earlier; adjusted operating earnings were $517 million ($7.55 per diluted share) against $433 million ($6.16).
  • 2Retail annuity sales rose 22% to $6.5 billion, led by a record $3.0 billion of registered index-linked annuity (RILA) sales, up 44% from $2.1 billion, while variable annuity sales slipped 3% to $2.8 billion.
  • 3Retail Annuities pretax adjusted operating earnings were $638 million against $494 million, and the four segments together came to $612 million against $505 million.
  • 4Jackson returned $291 million to shareholders ($230 million of buybacks and $61 million of dividends), and the board raised the repurchase authorization by $1 billion.
  • 5Common equity fell to $7.9 billion ($117.72 per share) from $138.17 at year-end 2025, while adjusted book value per share rose to $164.47 from $155.78, a gap that reflects how Jackson's hedging and market-risk accounting works.

Why This Matters

Jackson is one of the largest sellers of variable and index-linked annuities in the United States, so its figures show where retirement savers are putting money and how an insurer that hedges market guarantees is doing. The quarter pairs record RILA demand with very large swings between GAAP and adjusted results, a reminder that annuity insurers' headline net income can say little about underlying earnings.
